I've grown fond of this PC game.... although I don't actually own the game. I've played it at my friend's house and it seems interesting, but it is a very long turned-based strategy game. Does anyone here have this game?

It does require a lot of thinking though..... and strategy. But true, it can be boring to most people who are 'born' for other things like sports and movies and other things.

I don't know how I've missed this thread for so long! Let me tell you this: Civilization IV and its expansion packs are my all-time favorite games. I own the original (a.k.a. "Vanilla") Civilization IV and the latest expansion pack, Beyond the Sword. I must admit that I am the kind of person who enjoys the slow-paced, strategy game in contrast to such fast-paced ones. Civilization IV (abbreviated Civ4), being a turn based game, appeals to me greatly because I can spend unlimited time on one turn pondering my decisions before moving on to the next. I can understand why others might not like this game. One of the main problems of Civ4 (and there aren't many to be honest) is that it has an enormous learning curve. I remember when I got this game back in the summer of 2007 and began playing. I was stuck on the "average" difficulty level (there are 9 difficulty levels, and they are ranging from easiest to hardest, Settler, Chieftain, Warlord, Noble, Prince, Monarch, Emperor, Immortal, and Deity) of Noble. It took me many months before I was ready to face Immortal and over a YEAR before I could finally beat Deity difficulty. I only have 2 deity wins under my belt, though, because each win took about 20 hours. Obviously, I don't have time to play Civ4 24/7 so I have completed very few games to be honest. The game themselves are very interesting because you raise your own civilization but have to battle AI leaders in the game. On deity difficulty, for instance, the AI will start with so many bonuses which only increase during the game, making that difficulty level practically unstoppable. Of course, I can't credit myself to all the success I've had with Civ4. The website of CivFanatics (http://civfanatics.com) has helped me move up in difficulty level and give me advice from the Civ community. I'd be more than willing to answer any question you all have about Civ.

To fully understand the write-ups, you need some knowledge of CIV since the audience is for advanced civ players.

Civ goes a long way toward being a great game, but it's frustrating how much better it *could* be. I think the problem lies in the fact that they can't decide whether they want to display realism OR to abstract everything into a more conceptual strategy game totally disconnected from reality. They use real life civilization names, city names, leader names, and names of world wonders, but when you ask for improvements in the game to make it more realistic, you always get the answer back, "our goal is NOT to be realistic, but to enable balance and playability". It goes half way and teases.
In spite of this, the only game that really tops it, IMO, is the original Medieval, Total War (not the Medieval II). The Risk-like campaign map and the realism of the battles more than made up for an economic model that was a little dumbed down from Civ.
Don't get me started on Age of Empires. I hate that crapware.

Ouchhh i LOVE this game, i play it for so long time but i still havent found taste of geting powned by Deity i love to play it like real world, with some wars some diplo, with alliances and so on... And mostly i play for fun so i dont want to be flustrated on higher difficulties. So far i have won few Monarchs games and ill probably end at this difficulty. CIV4 totaly "changable" my mods (there is plenty of them) if some think that it doesnt fit to him he can always found some better mod, or do one for himself

The most popular mod at CIV Fanatics (a fan site for the Civilization series) is Fall From Heaven (I and II) which really revamps the game by adding in new creatures, magic, and other features. There's also the NEXT WAR Mod which I haven't tried but is supposed to make wars much more realistic with tons of extra units added. In short, you've got quite a lot of material to enhance the game. ;D

Sorry for double posting, but I wanted to bring this topic back. For those who are wondering, I'm playing a PBEM (Play-by-email) game along with 4 other members at civfanatics.com (for 5 players total). The way this multiplayer game works is that I play a turn, then send the game via email to the next person in line, and they play their turn and send it to the next person, and so on. This way, we get to play about 1 turn a day and retain maximum focus. It also helps me control my addiction because ... if you finish your turn, you can't go on to your next turn until the 4 other players have played their turns, which usually takes 1-2 days. It's brilliant in my opinion.
Here's a screenshot of my starting position, in case you're interested. It's a very good starting position, because it has a gold resource, a corn resource, a cow resource, a clam resource, and a crab resource. 4 of those are food resources (I'm sure you can tell which ones are which even if you don't play CIV by looking at the resource bubbles) and the other one, gold, is a very useful luxury resource to increase research rate. This game is only in it's second turn (3920 BC) so there's still a lot left for me to do. I hope to meet another rival within 5-10 turns when my exploring warrior explores uncharted territory.
I deleted the screenshot.
