I have Windows XP, so I was wondering if any of you know what the benefits are for continuously downloading stuff for XP... well I meant updating things for Windows XP. My friend told me that I should check my updates once everyday.
Do you guys know what is the sole purpose of those updates?

The updates are designed to fix security holes and improve functionality of the OS. As much of an oxymoron as "functional Windows XP" is, I'd definitely recommend updating frequently. If an important update comes along, the system will notify you, so don't feel like you have to constantly be checking it.
