It's more like an editorial so it's not too borring
There are many injustices in the world. The only thing that creates them are ourselves. Weather it’s racism, discrimination against disabled people, or even were you are on the social latter. Theses were just a few of the social injustices in the world. There are many ways theses social injustices are brought out into our view: books/ poems (The House on Mango Street), plays (Of Mice and Men), movies (Forest Gump). While each one took place in a different time period you can see that social injustices don’t change. Of Mice and Men takes place early after the freedom of slaves and you can see racism there, you can also see it in Forest Gump which takes place toward the equal rights African American movement and The House on Mango Street which take place much closer to now. In both Forest Gump and Of Mice and Men you see how people with mental disabilities are treated. In House on Mango Street and Forest Gump treatment of the lower class is shown.
What causes one to be an outsider? I can name at least three right now… Can’t come up with one? How about the ones I just mentioned up there? In each piece there is an outsider in House on Mango Street all of the people that lived on Mango Street are outsiders to everyone else. In Of Mice and Men Lennie who had a disability is the outsider in that story. And in Forest Gump Forest has a mental disability and Lieutenant Dan gets a physical disability which cause them to become outsiders. Although in all three pieces they are outsiders they are treated differently. In House on Mango Street the people of Mango Street are treated worse than trash. No one wants to even think about talking to them, and they make that quite clear because when people pass through Mango Street they are fearful. But in Of Mice and Men and Forest Gump they are treated quite differently. Lennie and Forest are both treated as very stupid but they are also very valued. Lennie although people thought he was stupid he was an extremely hard worker. And Forest was an extremely well honored and respected army member. And then we get to Lieutenant Dan. In the army he was well respected but after he was still respected by others especially Forest but he didn’t respect himself. He thought he had lost his honor. Sometimes outsiders are only outsiders to themselves.
Each piece used different structural methods to get the piece across. House on Mango Street while although it’s considered a story is in reality a fusion of poem and story elements. It’s like glass, glass acts like a liquid but it’s really a solid House on Mango Street was written to look like a story but reads like a poem. Forest Gump is a movie. Then there is Of Mice and Men like House on Mango Street it reads like a story but if it is looked at more carefully it was written like a play. The poem story of House on Mango Street helps to bring across its point because by using a lot of description you can better understand how the characters feel. But at the same time it’s also written in first person so you get a lot from the main character but you don’t get much from anyone. Of Mice and Men is written in a story/ play. Because there is only one outsider it would have been better written in a first person point of view. Also the few pages of set up before each chapter really get boring and turn the reader off and that does nothing for the message. The movie format of Forest Gump combined with the story telling of Forest shows not only how “outsiders” are treated but more importantly that the “outsiders” are no different than us without saying it… For all you know I could have a disability if you can’t see the classic signs of disabilities then what’s the difference when you can see those signs.
P.S. I don’t have a disability… but you wouldn’t have known that unless I told you now would you.
